This is the tsubushi shimda hairstyle, worn by older geisha and geiko across Japan. It is also worn by some younger geisha in other districts, who add a bekkou stick to the front.
The term "shimada" is in several different types of Japanese traditional hairstyles and refers to the mage being formed into a looped ponytail, "squished" in the front and spread to create a fan shape, then bound in the middle with thin wire.
