gilded: Vejigante Mask

The Vejigante mask is based on a traditional mask made in Puerto Rico for Carnival in the area of Loiza. It is a syncretic tradition blending Spanish, African, and Taino cultures. The mask itself is supposed to be a symbol of the Moors who had invaded Spain and were later driven out by the Spaniards. Vejigantes have come to be associated with demons.
