kisetsu - Tsumami Kanzashi - Susuki - Turquoise Backing
Tsumami kanzashi are hair ornaments made of pinched silk (or in this case, shiny paper. It's not technically a tsumami kanzashi, but it's in the same category!) that are traditionally worn by maiko (apprentice geisha) to decorate their hair for formal occasions. This set is a 3 piece set that includes the main maiko style hana kanzashi, a small mezashi (in this case a fan), and a bridge of flowers over the back of the hair.
This set is susuki or pampas grass which is a kanzashi traditionally worn in August. It's made of reflective paper with a colored backing. Junior and senior maiko wear different colors of backing, with brighter red being worn by more junior maiko, and pale pink or white by senior. Other colors are fairly rare, but do exist.
