ROCOCO
French gowns worn from 1730 until the end of the Revolution are referred to as Rococo. British gowns worn during much of this period are referred to as Georgian (after King George), and the textures are a bit different for those, but since France was the leader of the fashion world during the 18th Century, the styling is essentially the same.
I have made MANY Rococo gowns, as I was a Versailles designer (until that RP sim closed). Etiquette was quite strict in the French court with different types of gowns being appropriate not only for different occasions, but also for the time of day. Here in SL, we can relax a bit about those rules (and it doesn't take us HOURS to dress and powder our wigs, either). Essentially, the least formal dresses (worn during the morning hours were the Robe Angalise gowns. The most commonly worn (afternoon through evening, usually were called Robe Francaise. For State Occasions and formal balls, the Mantua was the most formal of all the court gowns. At Versailles in SL, we also wore the "Grand Habit", which I have not been able to find any reference to in my research of historical fashion. I think that name was applied to the formal court gown that did not have the mantua train here in SL instead of just calling it a"court gown".
The Mantua and formal court gowns were never worn out of doors - only ni that palace, where the Robes (Anglaise and Francaise) were perfectly appropriate for a shopping trip in ones carriage, a tea party, strolls in the gardens, etc.
Most of these styles were worn over a pannier frame to provide their shape, but the Anglaise was worn over multiple petticoat layers without a pannier
