A brule-parfum consisting of a bowl with a lid in Japanese black lacquer with golden motifs and later mounted in gilt bronzes.

Luxury product assembled by merchand-mercier, the only ones allowed to handle exotic objects such as the exclusive lacquers imported from japan and later transform them into new objects suitable for the demanding wealthy clientele.

The brule-parfum, as its name suggests, was used to burn perfume or incense and impregnate the most elegant rooms with a flagrant scent. At a time when, even if refined in its interiors, the streets of Paris were dirty and dangerous, and therefore, the smell was associated with such qualities and the transmission of diseases. This was reason enough for the use of perfumes to be exploited on practically every surface, from pot-pourries, vases with fresh flowers, perfumed ointments... to incense burners with perfumes as delicious as the burners themselves.

Reproduction of a brule-parfum expossed at the Hotel de la Marine in Paris.
