1824 - The creation of the "Royal Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck": It was financed by an appeal to the Nation, launched by Sir William Hillary. It later became the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The English already have good experience with lifeboats, which they have been perfecting since 1789, notably by Henry Greathead, the man recognized as the inventor of the unsinkable lifeboat. The main quality of this 9.14 m canoe, three meters wide and pointed at both ends, is to be unsinkable, to an interior cork lining and the addition of a defensive belt also made of cork.

The English will supply a number of French Rescue Societies with canoes and English plans. In 1803, 31 canoes of this type were built by the Greathead shipyards.
