The 17th-century in Holland was a golden age of gardening and botanical illustration. Abraham Munting illustrated the plants of Groningen's Paradise a garden owned by the Academy of Groningen. The image, "Portulaca" (moss rose), is presented in a gesso frame painted black with a gold cartouche in each corner, in the 17th-century Italian tradition.
