Reversi / Othello
This is the first fully-fledged Reversi game board in SL. It knows all rules, prevents illegal moves, enforces the order of the moves between the opponents, gives hints on attempts to make an illegal move and lets you play against the computer at a high level of artificial intelligence.
Quick start guide:
Click the board and the select the type of game you want to play. (vs avatar, vs. computer, computer vs. computer). Black starts. First click on a square to place a black piece so that a white stone is enclosed with 2 black. The white piece then turns to black.
1.) Rules
The game is played on a 8x8 grid. The rules are easy.
Black starts.
Enclose with your piece at least one piece or an unbroken row of pieces of the opponent, so that a piece of your color is at either end of the row. The pieces enclosed then turn into pieces of your color.
If the player has still pieces of his color on the board but can't currently place an own piece according to the rules, he forfeits.
The game is won for the player when the opponent has no stone of his color left or if his piece count is higher at the end of the game, ie. when all squares are filled with pieces.
Find more info about the game at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversi
2) The board enforces the rules as well as the order of the players and doesn't allow to make illegal moves. Attempts to make illegal moves are announced.
3) There are following options:
- play against an ava mate (menu option: vs ava). The ava who grabbed the menu begins the game with black. The opponent is the ava who first starts to move a white piece. The player who lost the game will start first in the next one.
- play against the computer (menu option: vs comp). The opponent is replaced by the computer that will make appropriate moves. The algorithm is at an advanced level, so expect a tough game.
- Watch the computer play against itself (menu option: comp-comp). For your entertainment and the entertainment of your friends and for learning purposes of the strategy and tactic of the reversi. Again, black starts and in the subsequent matches the loosing party starts first.
4.) Some other features:
- After each game the ava who grabbed the menu will be asked to continue with another game or to quit.
- Pieces of the opponent that were enclosed are turned into own pieces automatically.
- The board will time out and reset when it is left with no response for 10 mins. This applies for the games with minimum one ava player. No time out applies when the computer plays against himself.
- In order to reset a running match or in case of any problems, click either one of the side faces or the bottom face of the board. It will reset the board immediately.
- The response time of the computer to make a move is in the order of a few seconds, but depends on the overall sim usage.
Have fun.
