A junk is an oriental sailboat design dating from ancient times and still in use today. Junks were originally developed during the Han Dynasty (220 BC–200 AD) and were used as ocean going vessels as early as the 2nd century AD. They were further evolved in the later dynasties, and were built and used throughout Asia for extensive ocean voyages.

A house boat is a boat that has been designed or modified to be used primarily as a human dwelling. Some house boats are not motorized, because they are usually moored, kept stationary at a fixed point and often tethered to land to provide utilities. However, many are capable of operation under their own power.

The Kansai region lies in the southern-central region of Japan's main island Honsh. The region includes the prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto and Shiga. Sometimes Fukui, Tokushima and Mie are also included. The Kansai region is the cultural and historical heart of Japan with 11% of its land area. The area also contains six of the seven top prefectures. The Kansai region lays claim to the earliest beginnings of Japanese civilization. It was Nara, the most eastern point on the Silk Road, that became the site of Japan's first permanent capital. This period (AD 710-784) saw the spread of Buddhism to Japan in 745. The Kansai region also boasts the Shinto religion's holiest shrine at Ise Shrine (built in 690 AD) in Mie prefecture.

The town Hosoi Mura lies in the Japan Kansai sim and is probably the best Japanese Edo period sim in Second Life. Visit the Town to pick up inspiration to start building your own scenery with the wonderful collection of building elements.
