Salon de Compagnie - Sevres Fruit Bowl (Porcelain)

This vase in gilded porcelain was created in 1761 by Jean-Claude Duplessis. Goldsmith of the king. He collaborated from 1748 with the Manufacture of Vincennes, then of Sèvres for which he designed many models. In particular, he created the forms for Louis XV's first service, known as the "bleu céleste" (celestial blue) service, delivered to the Palace of Versailles in 1753.
For this vase of "two figures of Nymphs leaning against a shell placed on an ornamental foot", Duplessis received in 1763 the large sum of six hundred livres.
The base of the group, formed of rockery foliage placed in a symmetrical manner, evokes the bronze mounts so characteristic of the Duplessis style. An ambitious project, the Nymphs with the shell are the largest group carried out in Sèvres since his creation. It is above all a unique example of collaboration between two of the greatest talents of the Manufacture in the 18th century. The Marquise de Pompadour, favorite of King Louis XV, bought a Shell vase on December 25, 1762, as mentioned in her inventory after death on July 12, 1764.
