Bauernschrank

The word is German, and still commonly known. Bauernschrank translates to farmer’s wardrobe. However, to call such a wardrobe “peasant” is a bit out of place, with even such renowned carpenters as Thomas Chippendale building them.

The form of cabinetry also goes under such names as Lowboy, Dutch Cabinet, Kaz, Kast, or Kasten, and they are known and used throughout all of Europe and North America.

Most likely why in Germany they got the name farmer’s wardrobe is because in Germany today, they are usually decorated with motives of a style of “Bauernmalerei,” a very colorful folk art common to southern Germany, and known in the US as “Bavarian Folk Art”.

However, the colorful examples of today are not the historical norm. Even in Chippendale’s time, they were considered to be one of the oldest forms of wardrobes known. They were built very simple, to very exclusive, using most all wood types.

This one I made to have wood of aged Oak. It is decorated with wood-burn carvings in a Bauernmalerei form, just not as colorful.

It is non-scripted.
