Draw clothes, skins, tattoos or whatever you want, directly onto the SL avatar model! Texture design software for Windows (XP, Vista, Win7, Win8; 32 or 64 bit).
It's been nearly 10 years since I first released AvPainter, and now it's time to say goodbye. I will no longer be able to offer any support, and there's no further development planned, so I'm making the software available to everyone for no charge.

Current owners, you can download the new version using the url you previously used. Re-rez your AvPainter Computer object in world to get the url again.
AvPainter is a tool to aid the creation of clothing for Second Life, allowing you to preview clothes and draw directly onto the avatar model. It is a separate application that runs in Windows, outside of Second Life, exporting targa (.tga) texture files to upload into SL.
You buy the AvPainter package which contains these instructions and a AvPainter Computer. The AvPainter Computer is a stylish computer model that you can keep out in your SL home if you wish. On rezzing, the AvPainter Computer will give you your own registration code and url for downloading the full version.
The full version of AvPainter occasionally checks for updates. You will be able to download any updates for AvPainter for no extra charge.
Although they can run side by side, AvPainter runs best without SL running. SL tends to grab a lot of texture memory and slows AvPainter a lot.

Help
-----
Full instructions are included with AvPainter (via Help->Show Instructions menu option).
- Paint clothes directly onto a Second Life avatar
- Paint sculpties
- Paint OBJ files
- Easy to use, deceptively powerful
I have yet to actually sit down and get to work on something using this but it's already proven a useful tool, mostly for getting a workable outline for a clothing template (Especially in the crotch where all the UV is crunched together and hard to seam together accurately)
Also really useful for previewing clothing without having to upload, for any designers in SL I would definitely recommend.
Only negative thing to say really is it can be a bit buggy, some (tiny) areas on the model cant be drawn on for example (On the back of the neck and feet)
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PROGRAM IVE EVER SEEN THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH SL. IT IS SIMPLE TO USE AND WORKS GREAT!!!!!! A MUST BUY
AvPainter is an almost MUST have for any Windows user designing clothes or skins for SL.
While it is certainly not a full function paint program, AvPainter fills a niche very well, falling in between the rather expensive Adobe Photoshop and the free "The Gimp" and SLCP (Second Life Clothing Previewer.)
AvPainter appears to have been designed for two functions:
1. Allow you to preview your textures the way they'll look on an avatar before uploading to Second Life which costs L$10 per texture. Note, this is the only feature of SLCP.
2. And here's the money shot. While you have your textures on AvPainter's avatar, you can zoom in, out, around, up and down and find the things that need fixing. Often, you can fix them from within AvPainter using one of the three drawing tools and color picker provided.
While basic and even fancy clothing can be made using AvPainter alone if you have the talent and patience, I've found that the best use for me is for touch-ups and "Pre-Photoshopping".
For instance... I've created a number of T-Shirt designs in Photoshop. I generally upload the completed full T-Shirt and use the Appearance Editor in SL to make sleeveless, midriff and cropped versions.
However, I hate the soft edges left using the SL editors.
But in Photoshop, even with the templates, it's difficult for me to judge where to "trim".
So I load the T-Shirt texture into AvPainter as an upper body texture. Now I can use the erase tool to erase a fine line where I want hems, holes or whatever. Once saved, THEN I take it back into Photoshop for detailed cleanup and the addition of trim with hard edges.
Neither Photoshop, nor The Gimp were meant to be used in a 3D world but have hundreds or thousands of tools to aid you in designing clothing for SL that AvPainter lacks (and considering the extremely low price it SHOULD lack them!!!)
AvPainter provides functions and benefits that no other program provides.
If you're serious about designing clothing or even skins for SL Avatars, you will benefit from having AvPainter in your graphics toolbox.
It helped me line up seams better than just using the avvie template in PS. Better freedom of expression and design for me since i can play with the rough-draft outline of my design and better see where the seams and area of cloth will go.
I love the "mirror" feature..that is a great time saver for me...
I'm hoping future versions of this product will enable pressure-sensitivity for pen tablets and maybe a "fill" option to outline the design then fill with an imported texture or color.
I don't quite care for the way the outline "skips" while drawing like a ball point pen running out of ink...but i can work around it....
Otherwise, having lots of fun with this...thankyou for making it!
I've always avoided making my own clothes before I bought this. Now I can't stop. The ability to preview your clothes before uploading them into SL is great.
Nicely done , integrates well with photo shop and templates , makes targa files , perfect symetrical design's , it's works .
