Product Updates:

Original Package:

Beginner's Katana - Sword (No Version Number): The original katana.
Beginner's Katana - Sheath (No Version Number): The original sheath.
No Double-Tap Feature

Update #1:

Beginner's Katana - Sword 1.0: The very first update. We had discovered that I had been mistaken about how to trigger the rotate left and right animations while in mouselook. A double-tap feature was set in place in order to trigger these animations while in mouselook.

Also, the scripting for the block animation was slightly improved so that, when used with the DCS combat HUD and health meter, there would be no further conflicts between its built-in guard stance and my own block animation.

Update #2:

Beginner's Katana - Sheath and Sword - New Black - A brand new look for the Beginner's Katana!

Beginner's Katana - Sheath and Sword - Brown - A brand new look for the Beginner's Katana!

Two New Animations - Back Draw and Back Sheath - The user now has a choice between carrying the sword at the hip, or carrying it at the spine.

The original sword, while humble in appearance, remains part of the package, for sentimental reasons. Hence, its picture remains.

Update #3:

Draw and Sheathe Scripts - I changed the scripts, a bit, so that the sword is independent of how the sheath is mounted. This ought to cut down on the number of items in one's inventory, as well as allow one to switch between a spine-mounted and a hip-mounted sheath without having to worry about changing out their swords, as well.

A New Updater HUD - I have now included a HUD that will automatically check for any updates. This should make obtaining the latest sword much eaiser for all concerned!

Causing Damage:

The Beginner’s Katana isn’t scripted to cause any actual damage, although I did allow a push effect for role-playing/film making (it seemed like push would be handy for those things).

If you would like to actually cause damage with the Beginner’s Katana, I recommend buying a health meter/HUD, such as the DCS2, which can be bought at DCS Island for 75L. My testers and I have used the Beginner’s Katana with the DCS2 to great effect, and have encountered no problems with it. (The fact that my testers have sent me to my “death” on many an occasion with my own sword is a testament to my lack of skill, not to the ineffectiveness of the katana! I promise!)

However, please be aware that I have discovered an odd feature of DCS Island: the Beginner’s Katana is not able to cause damage on DCS Island. My best guess as to why is that the island is configured to allow only weapons with official DCS scripts to cause damage. Mind, this is just a guess based on the fact that I have found the Beginner’s Katana, in conjunction with the DCS2 HUD and health meter, to work very well in other Sims that make use of the DCS2 system, such as Greek Peloponnesia. So what is the point of this observation? Don’t pick fights with people on DCS Island, with the intent of using the Beginner’s Katana as your main weapon, because you’ll be at a severe disadvantage!

The spine mount doesn't stick right by default but it's modify ok so you can easily fix it. I really appreciate that this author has an animation demo available in his store. For a "beginner" weapon, the quality was quite high and the kick attack is a nice touch.
