Karkat is a Troll, the dominant species of planet Alternia. Once described as "...kind of like klingons, or something." trolls are a typically violent, warrior race ruled by a hierarchy based on blood color (ie, blue bloods are LITERALLY blue blooded.)

Karkat's blood, candy red, is so low on the "Hemocaste" it's considered mutant. As such, Karkat tends to keep his blood color a secret from others, regardless of the fact that most already know and/or consider the whole blood caste thing stupid.
