This outfit makes a wonderful Halloween costume and is ideal for historical or fantasy role-play. She can be Marie Laveau or any tribal or voodoo queen, shaman, medicine-woman or priestess in many parts of the world. The different parts can be combined or used in various ways to customize the look. NOTE: All sculpts are copy and mod, but the mesh top and skirt are copy only.

ABOUT THE REAL MARIE:

Marie Laveau (approx. 1801-1881), better known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, is one of the most mysterious figures in American history. Almost all the facts of her life are shrouded in legend and confusion, beginning with the date of her birth (popular sources often cite 1794, but the records indicate 1801). All we can really be sure of is that she was a free woman of color who became the most powerful Voodoo leader in New Orleans. Thousands of people in the city—black, white, gens de couleur—flocked to her unique blend of Catholicism and African spirituality. New Orleans Voodoo was a religion, and Marie Laveau was its pope, priestess, and prophet.

There are no surviving images of Marie Laveau, though she is said to have been very beautiful. The most famous portrait of her depicts an attractive, light-skinned multi-racial woman in a dark dress, large colorful shawl, and turban. Free women of color in those days wore a turban called a tignon, which was simply the French New Orleans version of an African head wrap. They also wore fashionable gowns—the 1830s silhouette featured full long skirts, full sleeves, dropped shoulders—and large shawls. Marie was known to complete her look with simple gold hoop earrings. Our version has the dropped shoulders, long skirt and a necklace set which combines Marie's strong Catholic and Voodoo beliefs as symbolized by a cross choker and animal tooth necklace. Her pet Zombi the Snake is with her as it was in real life. Zombi was an integral part of Marie's voodoo ceremonies.
