The Edo Town Japanese Torii Gate is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine, although it can be found at Buddhist temples as well. It has two upright supports and two crossbars on the top, and is frequently painted vermilion. Some torii have tablets with writing mounted between the crossbars. Traditionally, torii are made of wood or stone. Torii mark the transition from the sacred (the shrine) to the profane (the normal world) (see Sacred-profane dichotomy). Inari shrines typically have many torii. A person who has been successful in business often donates a torii in gratitude. The Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto has thousands of such torii. The origin of the word "torii" is not known. One theory is that it was designed for birds to rest, as hinted by the kanji, which may be derived from 'chicken perch'. This is because in Shinto, birds are considered messengers of the gods. A second theory is that it is derived from the term pass through and enter).

All Edo Town buildings and structures are based on architecture to be found around the Kansai region in Japan. The Kansai region lies in the southern-central region of Japan's main island Honshu. The region includes the prefectures of Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto and Shiga. Sometimes Fukui, Tokushima and Mie are also included. While the use of the terms "Kansai" has changed over history, in most contexts the two can be considered the same. The Kansai region is the cultural and historical heart of Japan with 11% of its land area. The area also contains six of the seven top prefectures.

The Kansai region lays claim to the earliest beginnings of Japanese civilization. It was Nara, the most eastern point on the Silk Road, that became the site of Japan's first permanent capital. This period (AD 710-784) saw the spread of Buddhism to Japan in 745. The Kansai region also boasts the Shinto religion's holiest shrine at Ise Shrine (built in 690 AD) in Mie prefecture. The town Hosoi Mura lies in the Japan Kansai sim and is probably the best Japanese Edo period sim in Second Life. Visit the Town to pick up inspiration to start building your own scenery with the wonderful collection of building elements.
