The lyre is a stringed musical instrument that is classified as a member of the lute-family of instruments. The lyre has its origins in ancient history. Lyres were used in several ancient cultures surrounding the Mediterranean Sea (Syria, Anatolia, Greece c. 1700-1400 B.C.E., and then later spread throughout the Roman Empire). It was used in medieval times too.

The Seikilos epitaph is the oldest surviving complete musical composition, including musical notation, from anywhere in the world. The epitaph has been variously dated, but seems to be either from the 1st or the 2nd century CE.
