The Ocean Star has an all-new submarine drive system that simulates realistic submarine operations by the use of dive angles. On the surface it functions like a normal boat, but once you go below the surface, you have full three-dimensional control of the vessel by varying pitch (dive angle) and yaw (left-right.) The ballast system is automated and will maintain neutral buoyancy at all depths unless you blow or flood ballast. Doing so will take you quickly to the surface or the bottom.
It is also faster underwater than it is on the surface. It is possible to do some tricks, like breaching the sub (surfacing) at a high angle and high speed, which may "get some air" before falling back to the surface.
Hover mode is available if you are on the surface and below the speed threshold. Hover mode is a slow mode and helpful to maneuver the sub on to land (it's not really a land vehicle, but can go on land at crawl speed) or get you out of a difficult spot.
Stationkeeping mode is available from submerged or surface modes provided you are already nearly motionless. This will essentially stop you in place and allow you to dial in your position with high precision.
If you go high enough above the water level, the sub will think it is on land and automatically go into hover mode. This is also how it will interpret starting the engines on land. This way you can crawl from land to the water, and then type h to exit hover and drop into the water.
Spotlights can be toggled on and off, and you also have the option of "turret" which will aim the lights where your mouselook aim is pointed.
The HUD contains most of the important information and many of the controls which are shown above. Clicking the green/red on-off button will hide or show the button panel. Along the left side of the hud is a visual representation of your submarine current pitch (useful to maintain or set depth in combat situations). Speeds indicated are scaled to 1:1 for SecondLife. Generally max surface speeds will be 16-17kts, and max submerged speeds are 23-24kts. This can vary due to server issues.
