About Saint Nicholas
December 6th, 342 in Myra, which lies in present day Turkey, a bisshop died that would become a patron saint of children. In the Netherlands 'Sinterklaas has been celebrated since the late middle ages at December 5th yearly, curiously enough this day is said to celebrate his 'birthday'.
Saint Nicholas rides a white horse over the rooftops and has a black helper, known as 'Zwarte Piet' (Black Peter). Kids put their shoes next to the chimney and will receive presents in them.
Further influences
Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus; the Dutch colonial town of New Amsterdam maintained a Sinterklaas tradition, long after it was occupied by the English and renamed New York City. The name Santa Claus is derived from older Dutch Sinte Klaas.
