Like all other ships in the European lineup of ships, Defiant is named after a Fictional Space craft. In this case the two USS Defiants as found in Star Trek and in Deep Space Nine. I like to think of my Defiant as being more like the ship from the latter show, small, maneuverable, and packing a punch. Make of that what you will, but it is my personal feelings on the matter as the designer and builder.
The Defiant is based on any number schooners that plied the waters of North America and Northern Europe from the early 1700s right the way to modern day. Slender, low to the water, and quick for their size, these were the original Greyhounds of the sea. While not based on any one Schooner, she take a number of cues many, giving her a unique look.
Like the other 8 gun ships involved in SPD battles, she has two bow chasers and six guns in the broadside position at three per side. Unlike my own Furia and Xi'an, and the TSS schooner, she has a working topsail. Defiant will act differently by when it is raised, below 75 degrees off of the wind, she will slow to a halt and begin to drift backwards, above 75 but below approximately 100 degrees, it will slow the ship some, above 100 degrees, it will speed the ship up to make up for the lack of drive from the fore and aft sails will running before the wind
