Ballinger's Marble House is based on the real "cottage" in Newport, Rhode Island, built for Alva Vanderbilt in 1892 and costing $11 million US [or around $600 million in today's dollars] It was only used for a few weeks during the summer season and only for 2 summers, after which the Vanderbilts divorced and she remarried and moved into her new husband's chateau-cottage, sending her maids back to Marble House to do the laundry.

Going up the carriage drive, you reach the columned portico, with its bronze and glass doors [said to weigh 10 tons] and enter the Foyer, completely clad in marble. [The cottage got its name from the 500,000 cubic feet of marble used in its construction. To the left is the grand Dining Room with fireplace and serviced by a small kitchen, plus a hall to the Library. To the right of the Foyer are the Gold Ballroom and the Gothic Room, both with Fireplaces. All these main rooms exist in the real house.

Up the staircase to the mezzanine, you'll find double Studies.

Continuing to the second floor, you reach the Living Hall, with railings overlooking the foyer below. This floor is comprised of the Owner's Suite [with damask used in the real house], 3 further Bedrooms and a Hall Bath.

The Foyer opens to the huge Terrace that faces the gardens.
