Community fallout shelter programs were implemented across major cities in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's, lasting throughout the Cold War. These community fallout shelters were designed not to protect from the overpressure blast or thermal damage resulting from the detonation of a nuclear weapon; rather, they were designed to provide several weeks worth of protection from fallout released during a potentially apocalyptic nuclear attack.

These shelters were selected from a range of local buildings in an area that offered a degree of protection from radioactive fallout. They typically were one or two large rooms, usually located underground in basements, stocked with enough food, water, and medical and sanitation supplies to provide safe, temporary refuge for a specific number of local citizens.

This sign is an authentic, restored 1960's-era fallout shelter sign. The sign uses one prim and is ideal for modern urban or cold war-era role play areas or home or business use.
