The jackalopes are what I like to think of as a budget breedable. They lack a lot of the bells and whistles that you can find in the more expensive pets, but they are much lower in cost and also much lower in land impact. They are for the pet owner who wants to breed something unique and fun, yet does not want to enter a competitive breeding market just to make enough linden dollars to feed their own pets, or for the person who wants to be a pet owner but cannot afford either the prims or the food costs for the more typical breedables. Due to the low number of prims used in their creation, the jackalopes are minimally animated--they hop around instead of walking, but they are a type of rabbit, after all.
Each jackalope has a land impact of 4, and the pen and the basic food have a land impact of 1 each, for a total of 14 prims for three jackalopes and their food and pen.
Jackalopes must grow for seven days before they are old enough to breed. The starter jackalopes come in combinations of red, green, and blue, but with a bit of time and effort they can be bred in all the colors of the rainbow! Choose to breed jackalopes in colors that will mix to make certain shades, or just breed whatever comes to hand and see what happens! A red jackalope and a blue one will produce purple offspring, for example. It is up to you whether you breed for realistic colors or fantastic ones. Just put the jackalopes that you want to breed together into the same Jackalope Pen. They should stay within the confines of their own Jackalope Pen, and if they don't have one at all they will be too afraid to move, let alone breed. You can get a new Jackalope Pen at any time by clicking the Home Object option on any live jackalope's menu or by choosing the Jackalope Pen from the menu of a Jackalope Supplies Giver.
The jackalopes are wild creatures and somewhat fragile. They cannot live in your inventory without being captured and packaged in the correct container. Jackalope eggs (Yes, they hatch from eggs! They are fantasy critters.) must go into a Jackalope Nest, and the jackalopes themselves must go into a Jackalope Crate. Once packaged in a Jackalope Crate, the jackalope will no longer age or require food to eat until it is unpackaged again. To package a jackalope or egg, first rez a nest or a crate nearby and then click on the pet or egg and choose the package option from the menu. The pet or egg will then enter the container and the nest or crate will change appearance to show what color of pet is inside. To unpackage the pet or egg, just rez the crate or nest and click the unpackage option on its menu. Do not try to "open" any of the objects related to the jackalopes, or you will break them!
Jackalope Crates and Jackalope Nests are one-use objects, but you can get as many of them as you need from your Jackalope Supplies Giver. Avoid packaging a pregnant female jackalope if you can, because if she is packaged she will lose her egg. A pet or egg that is packaged properly can safely be taken in and out of inventory or transferred from avatar to avatar.
See the related items for this listing for either the basic or the fancy jackalope food, once your starter pack food has run out. It should last about a week and a half for all three included jackalopes. If you want to give them a chance to breed offspring that glow, try the Fancy Jackalope Food.
Also see the related items for different packs of eggs to add to your breeding gene pool. Have fun breeding your jackalopes!
A permanent pet option is now available, as well! Check the related items for a Permanent Pet Jackalope Crate.
