Pavese, Pavise, Pavisa, Pavis, Tower shield(Garrisons loved them), Boffese, Setztartsche, Setzschild, Tartsche. This was most popular shield in whole Europe. Made from 3 or more dry planks, glued and nailed together with weather proof glue, then covered with cheap but thick leather and cheap canvas (some even with stolen bedsheets), which was soaked in the same weather proof glue. The result was a flexible composite shield capable to stop arrows, darts and even bullets.
The Cavalry Pavise was used by Cavalry Soldiers and Knights as gleich for battles and competition fighting. it was also used to decorate own tent or castle.
After that it was painted with oil and decorated by its owner. With the time decorations became more and more luxurious and personal. the units or even single soldiers ordered painters to draw own designs.
