This is a tool that allows any SL viewer to see the new avatar Display Names of avatars within a 96m radius. Why the need for a separate tool? A couple reasons:
- As of 1/1/2011, only a few viewers besides Viewer 2 have built-in support for display names. Many are still using alternate viewers (including 1.23) that do not support them. This tool will show display names no matter which viewer you are using.
- When switched on in the viewer, display names appear everywhere (chat, friends list, radar, etc.), Because of this, some keep display names turned off for simplicity of viewing, or for security reasons (being sure of exactly whom you are talking to, without worrying about name spoofing).

So, even for those using Viewer 2 or other DN-enabled viewers, this tool allows you the freedom to turn off display names in the interface, but still have a way to access them when needed.

The Display Name Radar tool is worn as a HUD, and includes the following features:

(1) RADAR
Will show you the display names of anyone within 96m, and their distance from you, in the format:
Display name (legacy name) [10m]
By default, those with the last name of "Resident" or "Guest" will only show up if they have changed their display name from the default; however there is an option to display these user regardless, in which case the legacy name will show as (.. Resident) or (.. Guest).
You can also configure the display so that it shows ALL avi's within 96m, and those without display names will show only their legacy SL name.
In cases where there are too many names to fit onto the on-screen floating text display, the HUD also has a "LIST" option, which will display all current names in local chat along with the region name and coordinates. This is also a handy way to get a listing of avi's in the area for documentation purposes.
(NOTE: Due to SL limitations, only the closest 16 avatars will be reported in any one pass.)

(2) LOOK UP DISPLAY NAME FOR A GIVEN FIRST/LAST NAME
Click on the HUD, choose "Lookup", and then type in the "legacy" first and last name (or the UUID) of any Second Life resident. It will tell you if that avatar has a display name currently set, and if so what it is. Note that this process uses a third party lookup service, and because of this newer residents may not be found by name, which is why I provided an option to enter the avatar's UUID instead.

The HUD should work in no-script areas, provided that you have it attached prior to entering.

Exactly what I needed, does what it's suppose to. No setup needed, all you need to do is wear the HUD and it's ready. Fair price!
