After a design of Agostino Gerli, a set of Lombard chairs dated 1770.
These parcel-gilt fauteuils "a chassis" (meaning the cushion seat was loose and thereby easy to replace) feature a rectangular padded back within a husk carved frame a seat-rail carved with ribbon-tied berried laurel leaves, armrest ending in sphinxes and supported by legs topped with an ebonized bust of a sphinx.
Conceived at the height of neoclassical style, with a characteristic style, Northern Italian productions distanced themselves from French taste when it comes to the most exquisite productions, mixing sober straight lines with sculptural carvings in volumetric contrast, achieving a very characteristic taste both in originality and aesthetic.
