Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) was a French painter and sculptor, major exponent of the Academic painting tradition. Working with popular themes like Greek mythology and orientalism, he found in the concept of Napoleon's rule and especially in his african campaigns a lot of inspiration for historical portraits and paintings. He is currently considered one of the most important painters of his century.
