Keffiyeh

The Keffiyeh, or kufiya is also known as ghutrah (غُترَة), shemagh (شماغ), ḥaṭṭah (حَطّة), mashadah (مَشَدة) in Arabic, or chafiye (Persian: چَفیِه‎), sodera (Hebrew: סודרא‎) or cemedanî (Kurdish: جه مه داني).

It’s origins is unknown. It can be found pictured on stone reliefs in the Mesopotamian and North African regions dating back as far as 2500 B.C.E.

Even today, and while styles may vary, not only Arabs wear this headdress, but also Persian, Kurds, North Africans, and even Mizrahi/Sephardi Jews (Hebrew: מזרחים‎) of Israel.

However, historically, it is a headdress of Bedouins (Arabic: badw بَدْو or badawiyyīn/badawiyyūn بَدَوِيُّون, plurals of badawī بَدَوِي) of these areas and cultural groups.

Pre-dating our modern times, color and weave of cloth, and form of the bands holding the kaffiyeh in place, called an agal (Arabic: عقال‎, ʿiqāl), designated tribal origins. Today, this has mostly dissipated. Sephardi wear light blue & white, Palestinians black & white, Jordanians red & white or black & white, while those on the Arabian Peninsula tend more to red & white or all white. North Africans vary between red/white or black/white in Egypt, to green/white in Libya, to more tribal multi-colored in Morocco. Also with or without, and how large the tassels are still plays a role. Still historically, many were extremely colorful, and while rather uncommon to see today, will be worn to make a statement, usually political.

I have created 42 color variations in 4 styles, using 3 styles of agals (headbands).
