MU TORERE is a Maori game of strategy for 2 players from New Zealand.

Each player has 4 stones ('perepere') which are initially placed in holes at the points ('kewai') of an eight-pointed star (or at the vertices of an octagon), forming 2 continuous arcs opposite each other. This product offers two colour schemes for the stones, available before the start of a game from the menu - red & green or black & white.

Each player in turn moves a stone to an adjacent hole, subject to the rule that a stone cannot be moved to the centre ('putahi') unless it has at least one adjacent stone belonging to the other player. The aim of the game is to force the opponent into a position where no move is possible (e.g. see alternate image).

To start the game, two players click the board or base to register as players. The first person to play is chosen at random and announced in chat. There is a no-move time-out of 2 minutes, after which the game will reset. If one player wins, a victory chant of the longest place name, 'Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu' will be heard!

The base has a diameter of 1.5m, and is is textured in Kauri wood, and the board perimeter in traditional Maori designs.
