An Empire mahogany sonmo (side table) from the early 19th century.
Created under the Consulate - in the first years of the reign of Napoleon I - the somno or somneau is presented as a small piece of furniture in the shape of a cylindrical or square table, composed of a closed part which offers storage space. It is placed in the bedroom, often next to the bed to serve as a bedside table. It was under the Empire that this table took the name "somno", from the Latin somnus which means "sleep".
