PAPI lights (boxed)
This is a set of precision approach path indicator (PAPI) lights, used to indicate to approaching aircraft whether they have acquired the correct glide slope and to maintain the correct glide slope when acquired.
They are normally used in sets of 4, each one at a different inclination. The inclination of the lights gives a visual clue to an approaching aircraft.
4 red lights is below the correct glide slope, while 4 white lights means that you're above the glide slope. White and red at the same time means that you're on the glide slope.
The array of lights is usually positioned on the left side of a runway, but can be on the right hand side so you'll find grouped objects reflecting both uses. Simply rez the group you need and delete the plywood cube placeholder when done :)
The lights come set up around a 14 degree glide slope (and yes, that's waaaaay steeper than RL's usual 3%, but this is SL). The centre pair of lights in the group are 2 degrees either side of that (so 12 and 16 degree from horizontal) while the outer pair are 6 degrees either side (therefore 8 and 20 degrees from horizontal).
The head is linked to the stand, so you can adjust the angle to fit your runway and the aircraft that commonly use it.
The lights are 100% mesh, so you'll need a mesh viewer to see them. Each light is a little under 3LI, so you should see this reported as 3LI in the editor. The head is 1.8LI while the stand is 1LI.
Each light is about 2.5m tall and about 2.5m long. That's larger than RL, mainly because of visibility here in SL. We don't have the benefit of actual light projection here, so visibility comes down to spotting glowing faces. Feel free to shrink them if you'd prefer something closer to scale.
How to use them
===========
Simply rez them, position them and enjoy!
They are unscripted, as you don't need any fancified lights eating up sim resources with needless resize/light scripting.
They are mod, so if you want to script them, then you can :) An example would be making them flash when an aircraft is on the runway.
They have the projector light feature set up, but turned off. You'll need to be using the Advanced Lighting Model to see the projection, by the way. There's not much point having all 4 as light sources, but you may want to enable one of them for the fancy white/red projection effect when standing in front of the lights. Your choice :)
Copy/Mod
=======
Yeah, copy/mod cos that's the way things should be.
The light head accepts one texture but has 4 individual mesh faces. The faces are:-
face 0: the outside of the box - orange as supplied
face 1: the inside of the box - near black as supplied
face 2: the red light - glow 0.3 as supplied, white on the texture and tinted red
face 3: the white light - glow 0.3 as supplied, white on the texture and not tinted
All 4 faces are present on the single texture to give you the flexibility to modify.
The stand has just one face, it's not fancy at all.
Full perm textures, AO and UV maps are provided for modding to suit your airport.
See item in Second Life- just 3LI per light
- so 12 land impact for all four lights
- copy and mod, with full perm textures/AO/UV maps for modding
- cheap! and flexible
Exelent
I saw these on approach on an airport in sl and liked very much them being there and actually working as they should. I bought them just to make a review and say thanks for making these :)
