A rococo folding stool, in wood carved with rocaille style and gilded. cushion upholstered in a crimson pink silk damask with fringes and matching trimmings tassels.

In a court as hierarchically structured as that of Versailles in front of the royal family seated in armchairs, this type of tabouret represented the highest ranks of the aristocracy, in which Dukes, Peers of France and Princes “du Sang” could sit in contrast with the rest of courtiers, obliged to remain standing throughout the ceremony.
Such was their rank that the stools were even kept empty and in position if during the ceremony there were no attendants of sufficient rank to occupy them.

Mid 1740

Part of the “Aumont” collection

Magnifique tabouret qui a déjà sa place à Versailles.
