A traditional spinning wheel is really just a belt drive, and as can be seen in this model, often the bobbin carrier and other accessories were easily detachable. The attachments were simply pushed into ready drilled holes in the base, so they could be replaced for other holding gear, to use the wheel as a lathe or other purposes that required power from the treadle and wheel.
