Today, the Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) remians the largst marsupial carnivore on earth.
It is a mainly nocturnal animal, hunting small prey and feeding on carrion. It is well known for its loud and threatening call - the reason why the settlers named him "The Devil".
Unlike most of Australian megafauna it survived the arrival of aboriginal australains some 40 000 years ago, but seems to have disappeared from mainland australia some 4000 years ago. The reason for that extinction is uncertain, although the introduction of the dog to the continent probably played a key role. At the same time the other large carnivore - the Thylacine - also became extinct in mainland Australia.
Both of these speces survived on Tasmania, but while the Thylacine was hunted to extinction by european settlers, the Tasmanian devil fared much better and still survives on Tasmania.
Currently the population is threatened by a particularly malevolent cancer epidemic. However vigorous government and volunteer actions are ongoing in order to save this species.
Enjoy!
