This is the "Ichougaeshi" Japanese hairstyle, also called "Chouchou" hairstyle.

Around the end of the Edo period, this hairstyle was for teenage girls, but after the Meiji period, it was worn by a wide range of ages, both married and unmarried.

In Edo (now Tokyo), it was called "Ichō-gaeshi" and in Kyoto and Osaka, it was called "Chōchō" (meaning butterfly), and young people wore their topknots larger, while older people wore them smaller.

Also, women of a stylish background, such as geisha, wore the back of their topknots slightly lower, and the Chocho of Kyoto and Osaka was tied in a round shape.

It is an everyday hairstyle, and is not worn at ceremonies. Also, the comb for this hairstyle features an Edo-style boat called "yakatabune" and some gentle waves. The tama (ball) kanzashi is also styled after the late Edo/early Meiji period!

幕末頃は十代の少女の髪型だったが、明治以降は未婚・既婚を問わず幅広い年代に結われた。

江戸では「銀杏返し」、京阪では「蝶々」と呼ばれ、若い人は髷を大きめに、年配者は小さめに結った。

また、芸者など粋筋の女性は髷の後ろを下げ気味に、京阪の蝶々は丸い形に結った。

普段の髪型で、儀式などでは結わない。
