What is it?
A personal mover that allows you to move through SL space in any of six directions at a number of different distances - for each step. That means - you can keep going in the same direction if SL permits .... forever. Of course, I think the sky is limited to 4096 meters high or something like that, the last I checked, and SIMs can have limitations.
How does it work?
Well, you right click it and choose to stand on it. A menu should come up, but if not, just left click the platform and it will come up. After this, the usage is twofold:
1. Set the Direction of any of six ways (X,Y,Z - but also reverse afterwards to make -X,-Y,-Z)
2. Choose how many meters to go in that direction
Features:
* Can only be used by the owner
* Can travel through normal SL walls (but not red blocked areas of course)
* Can hover and allow you to work or observe
* Can go as far as 500m or as little as 0.1 meters in direction at one time
* Can cross Sim Boundaries if allowed by the next Sim owner
* Tells the direction back to home if you wander too far and are lost
WHICH WAY IS WHICH?
Well up is + Z, and down is -Z. As for X,Y,-X,-Y well, I forget myself. But those are marked on the sides of the platform so all you need to do is to look down to see which of those you want to go in.
THE HOME INDICATOR <x,y,z>
This will keep track of the direction home - but only to the nearest meter each direction to keep it clean and simple. For example, if you go 100.2 m straight up, the home indicator would be: <0,0,-100> meaning that home is 100 meters straight down. Why not just allow it to go home on its own? Not all areas of SL allow you to travel through them. Homing in a straight line thus can run into road blocks. So this tells you the direction but lets you decide which direction you go first: x, y or z or the reverse of each of those.
Can you teleport? We find that if you do that your avatar moves but your people mover becomes space junk and stays where it is at. ho hum. Sort of like a car or plane, one must drive it home. Of course if you want speed, you could "stand" and then take the people mover into inventory and then teleport home as you free fall.
USAGES
We find this most useful when working on sky boxes, or moving through our own sky box walls to see outside of it, or what is near us. We also use it to find space junk we may have sent into space while building and changing x,y,z of a prim and getting it wrong sending it into SL outer space. When we do that. we often know our mistake and use the people mover to go find it, take the space junk into inventory or delete it, or send it to its correct spot. We also sometimes use it to check our security orb system, or to just see what is around us. We use it - quite a lot.
THE SECOND VERSION
Since this is our second version, we learned from the first. While we loved the first version and used it a lot ourselves, this second version for our tastes has two improvements:
1. It has only one menu - so no more fooling with endless sub menus
2. It tells us what direction home is - where we first stood. This we find quite helpful and fast for getting back.
LIMITATIONS
* It cannot work in SL where it is not allowed. What can we say? Of course
* Since it can go through most walls the user must respect the privacy of others
* If going more than 10m at a time - and up to 500m is possible, it may take a second, or SL might not even register the new location at first - you might need to press "esc" to show your new location better.
* Cannot be rotated - at least not for long - will self correct during menu or other times to ensure that the printed X,Y,-X,-Y notes on the people mover are accurate.
Hope you Enjoy!
