The Demoiselle
The Demoiselle was the last aircraft built by the great brazilian designer Alberto Santos-Dumont, and can be considered the first practical example of ultralight aircraft. The Demoiselle could be constructed in only fifteen days and had an outstanding performance for those days, flying at around 100 Km/h, stable and easy to control.
The original 1908 model (called No. 19) featured a 20 HP engine and was damaged beyond reparation on a crash. Subsequent versions improved the powerplant and the structural design, becoming a very popular aircraft.
The June 1910 edition of the Popular Mechanics magazine published drawings of the Demoiselle and affirmed that "This machine is better than any other which has ever been built"
A flying replica of this aircraft was built for the movie Those Magnificent Men And Their Flying Machines, flown in the movie by the character Pierre Dubois (Jean Pierre Cassel), in representation of France.
The model represented is the 1908 model with a flat-twin 20 HP water cooled engine with under wing radiators.
