Ame-Snek (Snake) stems from the ability of Amehana the storm dragon kami to shift her shape into particular forms. Snake-based is one continuum that she has learned to shift along. Here she has fully slipped into a snake form, which is rather cobra based. Even as a snake though there are some things that link her to her dragon-self, such as how her wings and plumage pull into and feather what becomes her hood. Not pictured is the prehensile plumage at the tip of her tail that at times acts as a hand.

There are instances in Japanese folklore where kami take on the forms of snakes and dragons, or shift between these forms. The White Snake, for example, is the story of how a kami impregnates a young woman and the fallout of that relationship.
