The deep brown ground offers a stunning contrast to the rich gold "Herati" or "Mahi-Mahi" pattern of the main field on this opulent antique Amritsar. The precision of the drawing gives the impression of gold filigree metalwork. Upon closer inspection, the underlying geometry of intersecting circles, teases the viewer like the Cheshire cat's smile. Against the brilliant contrasts of the field, the main and minor borders offer a more uniform golden hue that encloses and structures the whole composition like an antique frame. A rug of great decorative beauty and charm.
