Duke Kahanamoku Statue
Duke Paoa Kahanamoku was born August 24, 1890 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was the oldest of six sons and three daughters and grew up in carefree Waikiki with the ocean as his playground. He loved swimming, surfing, canoeing and bodysurfing and became an outstanding athlete.
At the age of 21 he won his first Olympic gold medal, then went on to represent the United States in the Olympics for 20 years, winning numerous medals.
Because of Duke, surfing became popular around the world. He was a remarkable athlete but is also known for his good humor and his sportsmanship.
