If you live on the edge of a sim with a view of the Void Sea, you probably have taken advantage of this by installing “sim extenders” to improve the view. There are rocks, icebergs, islands waves and other things you can place out there. Needle Rock doesn't just improve the view, it also interacts with off-sim surfing!

This rock can sit up to 50 meters off-sim. A dialog allows you to change the distance off-sim and also change the size of the rock. If placed in front of an Ocean Engineering off-sim wave, it creates an obstacle that you must avoid while surfing. If you run into Needle Rock, your surfboard or kayak can loose the wave or even get stuck on the rock until the next wave comes by and washes you off. It is called Needle Rock because the gap between two of the points is wide enough that you can “thread the needle” and surf between the points.

Do you live up in a skybox? Needle Rock also works at altitude! You can install one next to your skybox and surf over and around this rock up there!

Don't give up valuable land to make water to surf in! Surf Off-Sim!

To see this rock in action, come to my Ocean Engineering Store. Several waves and buoys are running there, free surfboards, surf kayaks, paddles and body surfing are available for trying. Find links to my stores at http://magic.kayaker.net

Best Locations for Needle Rock:

Needle Rock is an off-sim extender that can hang up to 50 meters off-sim. But it can also be placed onsim in LindenWater on land or even in Sky Water next to your skybox. For unusual setups like installing on land, install it normally, use the dialog menu to move it back on-sim to a 0 offset, then use the Build tools to move it to the final location.

Installing Needle Rock at Ground or Linden Water Level:

To get the rock started, stand close to the edge of the sim and drag Needle Rock out of inventory onto the ground. If you have water at the edge of the sim it is best to place the rock on the ground under the water. The rock will choose a direction, a distance and move off-sim. It may take up to 30 seconds for a kayak or surfboard to “notice” that a new rock is in place.

Installing more than one Needle Rock:

The rock is COPY so you can install several of them if you like. However, kayaks and surfboards can only keep track of one rock at a time. So the rocks should be placed far enough apart that it takes 30 seconds to paddle from one to the next. If you give each rock a different name with the build menu, the kayak base dialog will show you which rock it is currently set to interact with.

Installing Needle Rock next to a Skybox:

Since Second Life physics does not work off-sim, I had to write my own physics into the scripts! But this means that my surf physics will work anywhere, not just at “Linden Water” level. You can install this rock next to your skybox and surf around it at any altitude up to about 4095 meters. And the surf board, kayak, etc. will all work up there as well. Ocean Engineering “Sky Water” will make an installation like this easier.

If you drag the buoy out of inventory onto a prim above the ground (at least 100 meters but preferably much higher) it will assume you are installing it in “Sky Water” above the ground. At first the buoy will assume it was rezzed at about the correct altitude, survey your parcel and start running. It would be best if you installed Ocean Engineering “Sky Water” first. Sky Water communicates with the rock, waves and other off-sim toys like surfboards and makes everything work on the same sky-water level. It may take a minute for the rock to “notice” the Sky Water. Be patient and the rock will find it's level. Once it has settled down, you can move it in and off-sim with the dialog then move it to any location with the Build tools. If it is going to be used on-sim the Second Life physics engine will be happier if you use the dialog to decrease the off-sim offset to zero first.
