On and Off Sim Canoe - Yellow Version 4.46

If you have an island or property on the edge of a sim, it looks like there is water off the edge but you normally cannot go there. Some people call this the Void Sea. Off-sim extenders allow you to place objects out there to improve the view, but until now you could not paddle out there yourself. Now you can paddle out to your off-sim extensions and check them out! This Canoe breaks the barrier at the edge of the sim by paddling your avatar up to 40 meters into the Void Sea. It is possible to paddle all the way around your island if you have permission to be along the shore. The canoe is the first off-sim vehicle to work with the Ocean Engineering white water river. Do you have Linden Water on your property? The Canoe can seamlessly cross over and paddle on-sim as well.

To use this Canoe you wear a paddle prop in your right hand and sit on a rezzed canoe at the edge of the water.
You can leave canoes and a paddle prop on your property for your friends to use. The paddle is copyable by anyone. You control how many people can paddle at once by how many canoes you set out in free ride mode.
If one of your off-sim extenders is an Ocean Engineering Off-Sim wave, you will be able to surf that wave! Other Ocean Engineering rocks and features also interact with the Canoe, like white water rivers. Finally, the Off-Sim Canoe will also work at skybox altitudes! Don't give up valuable land to make water to paddle in! Paddle Off-Sim!

HOWEVER, there is a price to pay for all this. The Off-Sim Canoe is not a high-performance vehicle. To work off-sim it must use a hybrid-physical-non-physical movement that is sometimes jerky. It will surf Ocean Engineering Off-Sim waves, but will not surf the excellent on-sim waves made by others in SL. But to use those other waves on your own property, you need to give up thousands of square meters of land to water. If you just want to casually paddle off your own beach and you have shore-front property on the Void Sea, this Off-Sim Canoe will make that possible.

How the Off-Sim Canoe works:

The Off-Sim Canoe is like an off-sim extender but it extends your AVATAR off-sim. You are seated on an invisible vehicle, called the Canoe Base, that must remain on-sim. If this vehicle has lots of room to move, it moves you smoothly with sim physics. If this vehicle runs out of room to move, it moves your avatar with non-physical movement (which is a bit jerky). When you turn, rotations are always non-physical. The vehicle switches back and forth when necessary and uses smooth physical motion as much as possible. Since the vehicle is always on-sim and must stay on your land, if you have a small parcel the range of smooth physical movement will be limited by the size of your land. Even if you own a whole island, there are times when non-physical movement is necessary, like when paddling around the corner of a sim. When surfing, non-physical motion is sometimes necessary to get off-sim, but smooth physical motion is almost always used to ride back in!

Controlling your off-sim Canoe:

The Canoe is paddled by using the normal motion controls. This can be done using the mouse in the motion control dialog, by pressing the alphabetic motion keys, by pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard or even in mouse-look mode. Like walking your avatar, sometimes these keys do not work unless you close the local chat box or click on your avatar first.
