About ten allegorical clocks of this model with Apollo and Daphne (circa 1775), probably created by the marchand mercier Dominique Daguerre, are known. Records of the Sèvres porcelain manufactory indicate that twenty-three columns suitable for clock cases were supplied to Daguerre between 1772 and 1791.
On the left side is Apollo, most important and complex of the Olympian deities in classical Greek and Roman religion. Apollo was a god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light, poetry, and more. The model for the sculpture was the Apollo Belvedere, a celebrated marble sculpture from Classical Antiquity.
On the right side is Daphne, a minor figure in Greek mythology, female nymph associated with fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of freshwater.
