Sommer Type E - 1911

Roger Sommer, born in France in 1877, became involved with aviation from an early age.
After achieving the record for flight duration in 1909, he began working on aeronautic construction building more than 180 aircraft of different types, biplanes and monoplanes.
The Sommer monoplanes were built in three basic series: These were known as the Bleriot types, the Deperdussin types and the Morane types, as their basic shapes reflected the design practices of the aforemntioned manufacturers.
The first of the E series, as all three variations were collectively known, was built in 1910, and it was very similar to the Bleriot Type XI, but it was regarded as exceptionally strong, although very unstable. After some modifications suggested by the Sommer's chief pilot, Leon Bathiat, the machine became much more stable.
Sommer made many creditable flights in the type gaining much interest in the design following its first flight.
Many variations were built, and the model represented (1911) shows one of the most common versions, with the uncovered rear fuselage (except on the bottom), metalic cover for the engine and front fuselage (with side deflectors), and the omnipresent radial Gnome engine developing 50 Hp. to give the aircraft a max speed of 90 Km/h.
