[Fairport] Naginata
[Fairport] Naginata
=======================
Real Life History and Specs:
Type of weapon: Polearm
Origin: Japan
Time period: 1146 AD to late 1800's AD
The naginata is a Japanese polearm that is very similar to the European glaive; essentially it is a mildly curved sword blade on top of a shaft with a handguard between where the blade attaches to the shaft and the shaft itself. (Naginata handguards are usually round or oval in appearance traditionally.) It is thought by historians that the Chinese guan-dao spear (a weapon of very similar appearance,) may be the origin of the naginata design. The earliest records referring to the naginata, however, date to 1146 AD whereas the guan dao had been in China since 436 AD; leaving one to wonder if this really is the case, and if so, why the naginata had not appeared in Japan sooner. The blade itself of the naginata is made to extremely high quality standards; much like samurai swords of the day with many overlapping layers of iron and steel, creating a very flexible and sturdy yield. Many samurai clans in Japan did not associate with the naginata or any polearm for that matter, however, due to the belief that a polearm separates a warrior by distance from his enemy thus making him a coward. Records show though that such clans did not have a problem giving polearms to women to defend castle gates. Other clans had no problem with the concept and both men and women have been recorded as using this very effective weapon in battle. The design became less popular though with the influence of firearms around the mid 1500's in Japan and eventually the shorter-bladed yari became the more prominent polearm in samurai battles.

**Please note, if you wish to damage, make sure you are enabled in damage mode; ie: if you are in push mode switch to damage by using the 'enable damage mode' command. There are three settings for damage once you have enabled this mode: low, high, fatal. Damage is determined by the mass of your enemy. That's right, the larger or smaller your enemy avatar's mass alters the amount of damage one can do to them in a Linden damage zone. On average, however, low does about 7-13% damage on a hit, high does 30-40% on a hit, and fatal does 80-100% damage on a hit.
