A collection of Directoire and Empire-style furniture and decorative pieces from the first quarter of the 19th century.
Of a more severe line, the new Empire (Napoleon) style pieces were designed based on more faithful interpretations of the Greco-Roman period, in particular the Roman Republic, a period which after the fall of the Ancien Régime became very influential in all spheres of society.
Most of the pieces recreated here have a connection with Napoleon's imperial residences and most notably the Empress Josephine, who with her decised taste underpinned the new style by always seeking out the most exquisite (and costly) pieces for her interiors.
