Magnificent Louis XVI frame that hangs in the antichambre of the Petit Trianon. It is decorated with the cresting with a ribbon-tied arrow-filled quiver and torch, flanked by foliate garlands with flowerheads.
On May 31, 1783, Elisabeth-Louise Vigée Le Brun was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The same year she exhibited for the first time at the Salon in Paris a portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette wearing a straw hat. The simple cotton muslin dress that the Queen wore, inspired by Creole fashion, was deemed indecent because it was too simple for a sovereign, and the painting immediately created scandal, so much so that it had to be withdrawn and the artist was responsible for making a second version, more in line with the conveniences. Using the same composition, the Queen is this time dressed in a gray-blue silk dress (a color then known as “the chimneys of London”) Edged with lace, revealing the implicit but politically essential support that the sovereign brought to the traditional French luxury industries. This second version was an immediate success.
