An exceptional large giltwood Louis XVI frame, produced in the second half of the 18th century, ideal for landscape paintings or capricci. The picture inside can be replaced.

The original featured painting is "Capriccio with ruins of the Roman Forum" by Claude Lorrain. The city of Rome, with the old remains of the Empire, was a great inspiration for artists of all eras. Up until the late 19th century and the advent of mass urbanization, most of the iconic roman monuments in the eternal city were sitting in the middle of the countryside, allowing painters to represent these majestic structures in the wonderful italian paysage. This capriccio is a splendid example of how the area around the coliseum would appear to a 17th century traveler.

Claude Lorrain (1600 - 1682) was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher of the Baroque era. Living most of his life in Italy, he privileged landscape paintings, which often turned into history paintings with biblical or classical scenes. He only rarely painted scenes showing the renaissance or baroque roman architecture still being created in his lifetime, but he often borrowed from it to work up imaginary buildings.

Louis XVI Style; gilt wood. 100% Mesh.
