WindSock - The Wind Awareness HUD
***************************************************
Keep the pointy end out of the blue.
WHAT IS WINDSOCK?
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
WindSock is a wind-awareness HUD for SL sailing yachts - a teaching tool for sailors who want to feel the points of sail. Click any cardinal on the compass ring to set the wind direction. The blue wedge marks the no-go zone; the white arrow shows the wind source. As you turn, the compass rotates so its labels stay aligned with real-world directions - and the wedge stays at the world wind position.
You see the relative wind angle change as you sail. That's the whole point. Tack into the no-go zone and the sails luff. Bear away to a beam reach and they fill. The HUD doesn't trim your sails for you - it tells you where the wind is, and you do the rest.
WindSock is the companion to WindLock. Same fleet, same protocols, opposite philosophy: WindLock locks the wind to your bow so sails stay full at every heading; WindSock leaves the wind in world coordinates so you learn to read it.
WHAT IT DOES
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
• Click any cardinal on the compass ring to set the wind direction
• Wind stays in world coordinates as you turn
• Blue wedge marks the no-go zone - keep your bow out of it
• White arrow shows the wind source at a glance
• Two-digit speedometer shows your boat's speed in knots
• Pause button stops sending wind for race events
• Compass labels stay aligned with real-world directions
• Works the moment you sit - no scripts to add, no setup, no chat commands
CONTROLS
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
• Compass ring: click any cardinal (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW) to set wind
• Wedge and arrow: visual indicators of the wind source
• Speedometer: live boat speed in knots
• Pause button: white when active, red when paused
SETUP
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
None. Wear the WindSock HUD, rez your boat, and sit. WindSock reads the boat's heading and speed directly and starts sending wind right away - there's no script to drop in and nothing to configure, on any boat.
COMPATIBILITY
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
WindSock works on TMS, BOSS and GLW (Isard) sailing yachts - the bulk of the sailing fleet in Second Life, including the full Bandit range, the broader Mesh Shop catalogue, and the Isard fleet. Because nothing is dropped into the boat, no-modify yachts work too.
Boats that use a different wind command format (such as the Laser One) aren't supported.
NOT FOR RACING
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Organised Second Life races use enforced event wind set by race buoys, which override personal wind HUDs. WindSock is for sailors steering their own boats outside of organised competition - learning, teaching, and exploring the points of sail. The pause button stops WindSock sending wind, so you can use the HUD as a pure compass during races without fighting the event wind. On an Isard, WindSock uses the boat's own Personal Wind; to rejoin a GLW cruise or race afterwards, type "glw" or "racing" in local chat.
FOR SAILORS WHO WANT TO LEARN THE WIND
––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
Set the wind from any cardinal, then sail every angle to it. Beam reach, close hauled, broad reach, running - each point feels different in every boat. Sailing instructors can use WindSock to set scenarios: "Today the wind is from the south-west. Sail us a beam reach." Learners can drill points of sail until they're second nature. Experienced sailors can learn a new boat by working through every angle.
