Insolente is based on a rather rare and obscure ship. While she looks like a poleacre or a Xebec, she is not. Commissioned for the Russian Navy by Catherine the Great and built in Spain, Insolente is actually a "demi-Shebec" with only two masts. The foremast and sails are pure Mediterranean Xebec, but the main mast and sails are from the Brigantine, making her a bit of a hybrid. Used in the war with Sweden between 1788 to 1790, these shallow drafted and narrow ships were perfect for sailing the tidally locked and island infested Baltic sea

Heavy, but lacking the oars of her Mediterranean sisters, she relied on the steady winds found in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. Unlike other Tartana style ships found in the Black Rose Catalog, Insolente has a proper stern, not only does this make her wider and easier to hit from astern, but it allows for the proper placement of two stern chasers similar to that of Libertà

This is a big ship, the upper end of that is considered a "medium" and it should be sailed as such. With her stern chasers taking the place of two broadside positions, she cannot go toe to toe in a broadside to broadside battle, but should be used to swoop in, unleash the bow chasers, then the four broadside cannons, before sweeping away to uncover the stern chasers for a final two shots to add insult to injury.

Knowing how to sail such a ship can make any captain a hero, pirate or navy alike. To use her any other way is simply a waste of her capabilities. Are you up to the challenge, Captain?
